The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
