The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the option to challenge specific decisions from the official, following the system already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
